SGT Yano Library

SGT Yano Library offers a wide range of services and resources to the Garrison Hawaii Community. Our dedicated team will help you find what you are looking for and ensure you are able to use all the resources available to you at our facility.

As a guest of the library, you and your family have access to:

  • More than 90,000 items for check-out including audio books, audiobooks, movies, music, and video games
  • Foreign language collections in Spanish, Korean, and German
  • Manga/graphic novel collection

Cookbook Book Club

Gather, share, and savor delicious meals while developing your cooking skills! SGT Yano Library invites you to share your culinary journey with other aspiring chefs every last Thursday of the month from 2-4 p.m.

How it works:

Come to the SGT Yano Library and select a recipe from the themed cookbook of the month. Take your recipe home, practice preparing your dish, and bring your finished entree to the SGT Yano Library to share with fellow culinary connoisseurs.

Open to all DoD ID Cardholders & sponsored guests.

Loan Policies

Library Accounts

Per approval of the sponsor or spouse, eligible family members may have individual library accounts. The active duty service member is responsible for all lost library materials incurred by authorized family members.

Loan Periods

  • Books (no limit): 3 weeks
  • Audio books/Music CDs (limit 3, each type): 3 weeks
  • eReaders (Kobo): 3 weeks - SGT Yano Library only
  • DVDs (limit 3): 7 days
  • Video games (limit 1): 7 days (no holds permitted)
  • Audio Visual items: up to 30 minutes before closing

Renewals

  • Renewals must be made on or before the due date
  • Books, audio books and music CDs: up to 2 renewals for 3 weeks each 
  • eReaders (Kobo): up to 2 renewals
  • DVDs: up to 2 renewals for 7 days each
  • Videogames: no renewal 

You may renew materials that are not overdue or requested by another guest by phone +1 (808)655-8002 or online. To renew online, you must first set-up your PIN at the library's website. Click on "Forgot or need a PIN?"

Overdue Materials

There are no fines for overdue materials. Automated notices will be sent to the email associated with the library account. Courtesy notices are emailed 3 days prior to the due date. Guest will not be able to check out any more items until the overdue items are returned.

Lost, Damaged or Destroyed Items (AR 735-17 para 2-8b)

Restitution is required from the borrower when library materials are lost, damaged or destroyed while in checked out to the borrower. Military and DOD civilian sponsors are responsible for losses incurred by their family members. Restitution may take the form of replacement-in-kind: an identical copy, a satisfactory reissue of the same item, or an item of the same type of medium or equal value as determined by the librarian. Library policy is to accept only new items as replacements. Forms of payment accepted are cash or money order.

FAQ?

How do I get a library card?

Your military ID/CAC card is your library card.  Visit the library to set-up your account.  Sponsor or spouse must register their eligible family members.

How do I get a PIN number?

If you did not set-up a PIN number when you registered for a library account or if you forgot it, go to the library website.  Click on “Forgot or need a PIN?”

How do I renew items I’ve checked out from the library?

You may renew materials that are not overdue or requested by another guest by telephone +1 (808)655-8002; or online - go to My Account.  You will need your PIN to renew online.

How do I clear if I have books checked out?

In order to clear, you must return all items you have checked out.  Restitution must be made for any items that are lost or damaged before you will be cleared from the library.  Restitution may be made by replacement (with librarian’s approval), cash, or money order.

What if the item I want is already checked out?

You may place a hold on an item that that is owned by the SGT Yano or Fort Shafter Libraries.  Open the record in the web catalog and click on “Request an Item” in the Item Menu.  You will need your PIN.  You may also reserve an item by telephone +1 (808)655-8002.

What if the library doesn’t have the item I want?

You may suggest a purchase by clicking on the “Suggest a Purchase” link or request an interlibrary loan by contacting the library.

Does the library have study guides and practice tests?

Study guides and practice tests are available for a variety of exams to include CLEP, GED, ASVAB, SAT, ACT, and GRE.  Practice tests for CLEP, DSST, and ASVAB are also available online via the library catalog  select “Peterson’s DOD Lifelong Learning Resource Center.”  You will need your PIN.

Does the library have CAC enabled computers?

All public library computers have CAC readers and are available to military ID/CAC holders with library accounts.  Sessions are 60 minutes each and may be extended up to 120 minutes per person, per day, in 30 minute increments, as long as there is no one waiting to use a computer.  Computers are automatically shut off 5 minutes before the library closes. 

Does the library charge for printing?

The library charges .15¢ per page for black and white copies and .50¢ per page for color copies.

Does the library have change?

The library does not provide change for the copier or printers.  The copier or printers themselves accept U.S. coins and $1 and $5 bills and will provide change for these denominations as long as there is sufficient change in the vending station.  The vending stations do not accept debit or credit cards.

Does the library accept payment by checks, debit or credit cards?

The library only accepts payment by cash or money order for lost or damaged material.

Does the library have Wi-Fi?

Yes, the library provides free Wi-Fi.  The password changes the first Tuesday of each month.

Does the library have a public fax machine?

The library does not have a fax machine available for public use.  However, the library does have scanning capabilities so that you may scan and email your documents.  Fax services are provided for a fee at the following locations (not endorsed by SGT Yano Library): UPS Store located  at Schofield AAFES +1 (808)237-4531; Schofield AAFES Customer Service +1 (808)622-1773; or Schofield Inn +1 (808)624-9650.

Does the library provide test proctoring services?

The library does not provide proctoring. The following locations provide test proctoring for a fee (not endorsed by SGT Yano Library):  Wahiawa Public Library +1 (808)622-6345 or Sylvan Learning Center, Mililani +1 (808)623-0808.

How do I reserve the meeting/conference room?

Visit or call the library to reserve the meeting room. The meeting room is available from 9:30 a.m. until 30 minutes before the library closes. The person requesting the room must have a library account and sign the "Conference Room Use" agreement. Reservations may be made up to, two month in advance.

What is video story time?

Video story time provides military parents the opportunity to read to their children even when the parent is deployed.  Parents may bring their own books or use library books to record a story time for their children on DVD.  The library provides the video equipment.  Please call ahead to make an appointment.
